Hornet 1 at Strandgatan, Visby

Hornet 1 at Strandgatan, Liljehornska Huset, is the highest building in central Visby and has seven storeys.

The basic construction is medieval. Naturally many alterations have been made, like the changing of the window-openings, the entrances, the stairs, the chimney pipes and the distribution of rooms. Stone vaults have been torn down, but it seems that the height of the rooms is unchanged.
 

In the south-eastern basement much is unchanged since the Middle Ages, except for the floor planking.

Bore-cores have been taken in joists of the floor in the upper storey in the vaulted space. Some of them have waney edge and are dated 1254.

After fire in the attic some pieces of timber were removed. Dating from these together with bore-cores from undamaged wood gave for the whole truss the date 1306 in timber with waney edge.

After the fire antiquarians saved a number of samples of wood from the truss of the extension building to the east. The samples lack waney edge, and the dates of the outermost annual rings are: 1717, 1721, 1734, 1741, 1742, 1743 and 1744. As is shown the distribution of the years is not wide spread. Therefore we may assume that the framework of roof of the eastern extension building was erected in the middle of the 18th century and after 1744.
